The Best Crib Newborn Success Story You’ll Never Be Able To
Choosing the Best crib for newborn Crib Newborn
The Westport Cot Bed will look stunning in a Scandi nursery. It’s also extremely flexible, as it has three different mattress support heights and can be transformed into an infant’s bed.
Bassinets are a good option if you have a small house. Cribs can take up more space. Many parents prefer a crib because of safety concerns.
Safety
The choice of the best crib for newborns is crucial to your baby’s health and well-being. You must ensure that the crib meets current safety standards and is free from any dangers that could cause harm during sleep. It should be sturdy and well-constructed, with no loose parts that could get caught on clothing or pose the risk of choking. It is important to follow the instructions of the manufacturer for assembly and use and to regularly inspect the crib.
The first thing to look at is the space between slats. It should not be more than 2 and 3/8 inches, to keep your baby’s head or limbs from getting trapped in between them. You must also be able to easily see and reach your baby in the crib. If not, the slats should be broader and not as close to each other.
The mattress support system is an additional aspect to consider when choosing the crib. It is important to adjust the levels so that you can lower the mattress as your baby grows. This will reduce the chance of your child getting out of the crib which is a frequent situation as they begin to crawl.
Other safety features to consider include the fitted sheet that is able to fit the mattress with ease and solid and stable construction. You should also choose a crib that has fixed sides rather than ones with drop sides, which can be dangerous for your baby. It is also recommended to sleep in the same room as your baby for the first six months or so, and then transfer them to their own room when they are old enough to be watched when they are sleeping on their own.
Finally, you should ensure that the crib is positioned away from windows and radiators, and that any dangling objects such as curtains or blind cords are out of their reach. It is also recommended to remove any items that might pose the risk of choking, such as pillows or blankets. Be cautious when buying second-hand cribs, as they may not be in compliance with current safety standards, or have been recalled.
Design
It is crucial to remember that cribs may look identical, but they must meet the strict safety standards. For this reason, most cribs we examined have a similar design to ensure consistency in terms of structural quality. For instance, many have circular bars that do not have any gaps or rough areas that could catch or pinch a baby. We also tested and rated each crib for the ease of put together and use. We suggest selecting a crib with fewer parts to avoid confusion.
One of our favorite cribs is the Evolur Sprout Crib, which has an elegant, contemporary design and comes in several colors, including two-toned. It also has an all-purpose mattress fitting and is Greenguard Gold Certified for having low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Stork Craft Equinox 3 in 1 is a different option. This crib is sleek, modern and minimalist in appearance. It’s ideal for modern nurseries. The crib comes in various finishes and has four different mattress heights, meaning your baby can use it from newborn to toddler. This crib was very sturdy and stable. It didn’t flex or creak when a heavy child was seated.
Convertible cribs are a great option if you plan to have more children. These cribs can be converted into a bed for toddlers and then into a larger mattress, offering excellent value for money. Our test parents gave the Sweet2Sleep Crib high marks as an example of a convertible bed. A few of them mentioned that the side rails with a drop-down feature made nighttime feedings more secure and easier, and the crib was big enough for a baby who was sleeping with the parents to feel at ease while dad and mom were sleeping.
The Carter’s Colby 4-in-1 crib by DaVinci is a fantastic option for those who prefer the traditional style. This crib is cheaper than the Stork Craft and is a classic design that will fit in with the majority of nursery decors. It comes with three different mattress heights, but certain parents and toddlers may consider it too shallow.
Mattress
A washable crib mattress will come in handy for newborns. Spitting up from diapers and baby spit can cause mattresses to become dirty and damp which can lead to mildew or bacteria that could affect infants. Find a mattress cover that can be cleaned with cloths or cleaned with mild cleaner. You should also select a mattress cover that is waterproof to prevent fluids from leaking into the mattress and causing health problems.
Find a mattress that is that is rated for up to 10 years, so that it can be used for toddlers. A majority of the mattresses discussed here are reversible with infant and toddler side. This lets you use them from the moment of birth until your child is ready to move on to their full-size bed.
A firm crib mattress is ideal for infants, since it will provide the most support to their growing spines. A mattress that is firm and sturdy will also lower the chance of SIDS. This is due to the fact that an extremely soft mattress increases the likelihood that an infant’s head will sink into it.
Examine the label of a firm mattress to ensure it is in compliance with Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. The CPSC requires that mattresses be tested for flammability and waterproofing as well as lead and other chemicals that could pose a threat to babies. You can also find certifications such as Greenguard, CertiPUR and GOTS which show that the mattress has been tested for volatile organic compounds that can affect infants’ nervous and respiratory systems.
The weight of the mattress is a further factor to take into consideration. If you’re not able to lift heavy objects or you don’t wish to move a heavy object it is possible to choose a lighter mattress. For example, the Newton Wovenaire is incredibly light at just 8 pounds while the Naturepedic Organic Breathable Crib Mattress – Dual Firmness is 20 pounds, making it one of the heaviest in this review. It is also made of foam instead of woven-core inners. This makes it more comfortable to move around compared to a heavier traditional coil bed.
Assembly
A crib that’s easy to put together is great for parents who are new. Find one equipped with hardware that is securely held with no sharp edges or rough spots that could irritate your baby’s skin. Beware of cribs with drop-sides, or cutouts for the headboard and footboard as they aren’t compatible with the current safety standards.
If you decide to purchase a convertible crib, you will need to purchase an additional kit to convert it into a toddler bed. These kits are sold separately by most manufacturers. They’re typically affordable, and will aid your child’s transition to larger beds more easily.
Many new parents appreciate the durability that comes with convertible cribs and they’re a great investment for families with multiple children. These cribs have been built to last, and they can be converted into toddler beds, daybeds, or full-size beds.
The DaVinci Jayden 4-in-1 Crib is solid wood crib that’s GREENGUARD Gold Certified and has four mattress-level heights. It has a traditional style and is available in white or slate grey to match any nursery decor. The crib is simple to move around and comes with locking wheels. It can be used with the majority of twin mattresses. The crib took our test subjects only 23 minutes to assemble.
The Sprout Crib, another top-rated crib is made from sustainable harvested Baltic birch. It is in compliance with all U.S. safety standards, in addition to those of Canada, Australia and Europe. It also has a stylish minimalist design that will not clash with any bedroom decor. The Sprout crib is one of the tiniest cribs we’ve tested, with a weight of only 6kg. It’s easy to move and comes with a convenient bag for travel.
A runner-up in our testing the Oeuf Modern Crib is built from sustainably sourced New Zealand pine. It has received numerous awards from various parenting magazines such as BabyCenter and Babble. It has a medium profile and can be transformed from an infant crib into a toddler bed, with or without a rail. It’s easy to set up and has plenty of appeal. However, the slender finish is susceptible to scratches in normal use.
